Most would consider surfing in a storm crazy. However, surfing in a storm exposes you too much larger waves than you would normally experience, allowing you to increase your abilities as a surfer. By following a few simple steps and advice for swimming in a storm it’s possible to quickly improve your surfing experience.
Never surf in a storm by yourself. It is all to easy to be overconfident in your swimming abilities and end up being pulled under by a current or being overwhelmed by the large waves. Have a buddy with you while your surfing to assist you in case you start drowning. Make sure that they are certified in performing CPR.
Come mentally and physically prepared to surf in the storm. Surfing in a storm while you are intoxicated, tired or just physically worn out can quickly leave you fending for your life. Always consider the state your body is in before surfing in a storm.
Make sure that you have the proper safety equipment as well. No one is going to be angered with you if you decide to use a life preserver just in case. Always have a plastic strap that attaches your arm to the surfboard so that when you fall of you can’t easily be pulled under and have something to float on after a bail.
Gauge your surfing ability before undertaking such a task. It probably is not a very good idea to go surfing in a storm if it happens to be your first day learning to surf. Make sure that you have the swimming and surfing experience to avoid potential disaster.
Most of all, enjoy your surf experience in the storm. Not many are brave enough to surf at such a time but those that are will be legends of their own experience.
